• Powabyke secures UK distribution of MBM’s range of push and e-bikes

Powabyke UK has secured sole UK distribution rights with Italian brand MBM for its entire range of push and e-bikes, with stock currently arriving in bike dealerships around the country.

Established in 1998, Powabyke’s move into push bikes reflects the company’s drive to meet changes in public demand over the years, as well as reflecting the company’s plan to grow the business and diversify into other cycling-related channels.

Frank Curran, director of Powabyke UK, said: “Cycling has seen an extraordinary level of uptake over the last six months and has at times led to shortages of all sorts of parts – from inner tubes, wheels and tyres, to adult bikes. Many people are turning to electric and push bikes as an alternative to commuting on public transport, or for fitness and recreation. This huge and unexpected surge in demand of all types has stripped many bike shops of their stock. Even now, bikes are in short supply, with many suppliers out of stock until spring of next year!

“It’s important to Powabyke to offer quality bicycles to the UK cycle trade, enabling shops to replenish stock and help with continuity of supply to the public. We are working closely with MBM in Italy, and hope to provide its full range to our dealers within a matter of days. Plans are also afoot for a large presence at the Cycle Show in April next year, where we will be exhibiting the entire MBM range.”

Powabyke UK said it is “proud” to bring MBM’s Italian design and engineering to its network of dealers across the UK, complementing the company’s electric bikes with push bikes to offer a full range.

“We already have a stock of bikes ready to dispatch to our dealers,” added Curran. “Within the range, we offer ladies and gents hybrids, MTBs and children’s bikes, as well as some classic style urban cycles. Alongside supporting our established dealers, we are now actively looking for new dealers to join our team to help distribute the MBM range of bikes, so we urge shops to email sales@powabyke.com or call 01761 568085 to discuss working with us.”

MBM sales director Vincenzo Medugno said: “We are pleased to extend our range with Powabyke to offer even more bikes to the UK. We are proud to be working with Powabyke, which has a fantastic network of dealers throughout the UK which continues to grow. We look forward to continuing our relationship to keep up with public demand for both e-bikes and conventional cycles.”

  • Why Cycling Is Good For You During The COVID-19 Pandemic

    Credit BikeBiz

Now that everyone is doing their best to stick to social distancing, another important aspect is often forgotten: adequate exercise. Adequate exercise improves your body’s immune system and thus protects you better against COVID-19.

But now that the gyms are closed and outdoor sports in groups are no longer possible, many people must switch gears: how do I get enough exercise? The answer is surprisingly simple: go cycling!

Cycling protects you against COVID-19 in many ways. Here are five reasons to show you why, plus a smart tip for retailers and caterers.

    Powabyke Electric Bike Folder F100DX
    Powabyke Electric Bike F100DX

    1. Strengthening your immune system
Cycling has a positive effect on the health of almost all people. During cycling, your airways are well ventilated and the blood supply is better, according to the German virologist Michael Barczok in the German magazine, Der Spiegel: “The deeper breathing helps to cleanse the lungs better. That is optimal when it comes to virus protection.”

Moreover, you inhale more oxygen in the outdoors. And that’s healthy; for your memory, your skin and your lungs. Your body also builds more vitamin D, which contributes to your body’s immune system, improves your mood and sleeping. Besides, cycling reduces blood pressure and is good for diabetics.

    2. Part of daily exercise
The bicycle is always a good means of transport, even more so during the period of COVID-19. Now that the gyms are closed and many people work from home, it is difficult to get your daily dose of exercise. RIVM advises in this regard: “Do 150 minutes a week of moderately intense exercises, such as walking and cycling, spread over several days.” Grab your daily much-needed exercise, go cycling!

    3. Protect yourself and others: cycling as an alternative to public transport
Cycling not only keeps you at a distance from others but also reduces the risk of contamination by the touching of surfaces. Think of travelling on public transport. The virus can survive on surfaces for a longer period than in the air and can still be contagious. “Touching anything in public, is, therefore, a fundamental risk,” said Barczok. By cycling instead of taking public transport, you avoid many risks for yourself and others.

    4. You automatically keep your distance
According to Gerd Antes, the bicycle is the “perfect form of self-protection”. You quickly keep your distance from others on your bicycle. The chance that you breathe in the micro-drops that transmit the virus while cycling is virtually zero. According to RIVM, venturing outside is no problem, provided you follow the guidelines that have been drawn up.

    5. Cycling makes you happier
Now, with many people stressed out from everything that this virus pandemic entails, relaxation is very important. Perhaps the last tip is, therefore, the most important (and most fun): by cycling outdoors, you allow your body and your mind to relax. And the best part is this: the happiness hormones, endorphins, are released during cycling. You will be happier when cycling. So, grab that bike and make a nice trip every day.

Is Your Lock Up To The Job?

With the cost of electric bikes increasing, the last thing you want is your pride and joy being stolen. Make sure you secure your ebike with an approved lock that will do the job. Cycle locks are rated as to their toughness.

Bronze – Ideal for short journeys in to town where bikes will be left within sight, but not within reach

Silver – They tend to be more secure and will prevent a 3 minute prolonged attempt to steal your electric bike. Hopefully a passerby would have interrupted the attempted cycle theft and the would be ebike thief scarpers empty handed.

Gold – These cycle locks tend to be far more expensive and heavy. These products will withstand a thief for up to 5 minutes with all conceivable tools, during which time it is hoped they would either be put off and leave, or be disturbed. They are meant for the long term parking of your electric bike or electric trike such as places of work where the bike will be locked up all day. You may want to consider leaving your lock attached to the fixing point if it is a daily locking point, thus meaning you aren’t carrying a heavy cycle chain to and from work everyday!

Carefully Choose Where You Park Your Electric Bike

Where you leave your electric bike can greatly reduce the chances of it being stolen.

    • Lock your ebike in busy areas such as high streets or reception areas.
    • Lock it to something that has both ends securely attached or bolted the the wall or the floor.
    • Don’t lock your electric bike where it blocks access for prams and pushchairs, or on to railings that specifically say NO BIKE PARKING!
    • Use well lite areas that are well visable.

  • Powabyke Battery Recell and Recycle

Battery for the Powabyke Shopper 2002 Model Electric Bike

Powabyke still have thousands of electric bikes on the UK roads with some dating back over 20 years! The Somerset based electric bike company still supply many parts for the older generation bikes including the original lead acid battery cells. Prices start at £149 for a set of 3 lead acid batteries that fit inside the case such as the Shopper bike battery pictured above.

Lead acid battery cell that fits inside the case of the Powabyke Shopper Electric Bikes

The three 12v lead acid cells are wired up giving you 36v. The volts give you the power, while the amps give you the range. So a 7.2amp battery will give you approx 10-15 miles unassisted, while a 15amp battery will give you 30-40 miles unassisted. Please note though, there are many varying factors that affect range:

    • Size of rider/load being carried
    • Head winds
    • Hills
    • Tyre pressure
    • Air temperature
    • Temperature of battery when charging
    • Age of battery
    • Rider effort
    • Urban cycling vs long country cycling (stopping and starting frequently in a city environment will reduce range as the initial acceleration draws a lot more power compared to a bike that is travelling continuously at the maximum speed).
Battery for the Powabyke Euro and Commuter Range of Electric Bikes

Many of the old lead acid batteries can also be updated to lithium by an approved Powabyke Agent. Why not call Powabyke to discuss the options and prices. This service is what helps keep Powabyke electric bikes riding around the roads of the UK and beyond!
